Journalistic Writing – looking at newspaper reports and writing own reports
Extending narrative- Quests – Reading quest genre stories and writing own Quest style stories
Poetry- Power of imagery, personification and similes

Mathematics
Whole school maths targets for this half term are based on ordering numbers.
The Year 6 targets are displayed in the classrooms.
Counting, partitioning & calculating
Use efficient written methods to add and subtract integers and decimals, to multiply and divide integers and decimals by a one-digit integer, and to multiply two-digit and three-digit integers by a two-digit integer
Solve multi-step problems, and problems involving fractions, decimals and percentages; choose and use appropriate calculation strategies at each stage, including calculator use
Securing number facts, understanding shape
Express a larger whole number as a fraction of a smaller one (e.g. recognise that 8 slices of a 5-slice pizza represents 8/5 or 1 3/5 pizzas); simplify fractions by cancelling common factors; order a set of fractions by converting them to fractions with a common denominator
Explain reasoning and conclusions, using words, symbols or diagrams as appropriate
Handling data and measures
Suggest, plan and develop lines of enquiry; collect, organise and represent information, interpret results and review methods; identify and answer related questions

Science
Relating to the National Curriculum, children will learn about Forces and Motion including:
about the forces of attraction and repulsion between magnets, and about the forces of attraction between magnets and magnetic materials
that objects are pulled downwards because of the gravitational attraction between them and the Earth
about friction, including air resistance, as a force that slows moving objects and may prevent objects from starting to move
that when objects [for example, a spring, a table] are pushed or pulled, an opposing pull or push can be felt
how to measure forces and identify the direction in which they act.

This is an overview of the work we will be covering this half term.

English (as well as the Primary Framework)
Hampshire Illustrated Book Awards The books are chosen for their potential both to stimulate discussion and to introduce children to new and exciting ways of working.
Older Literature - sustain engagement with longer, older or classic texts. Children can identify aspects of the historical setting that may influence the way characters behave.
Poetic Style - hear, read and study in depth a range of poems from two significant writers.
Film Narratives - tell a story using notes designed to cue techniques, such as repetition, recap and humour. Reflect on how working in role helps to explore complex issues. Infer writers' perspectives from what is written and from what is implied.

Mathematics
Whole school maths targets for this term are based on ordering numbers.
The Year 5 targets are displayed in the classrooms.

Securing number facts, understanding shape
Teaching a variety of different approaches to multiplication leading towards partitioning for larger multiplication questions. Use fractions and percentages in a simple way. Looking at number patterns, using a calculator for rounding and ordering numbers. Investigating number patterns, where children have to consider and discuss their findings, persuading others with their presentation of evidence and explaining their ways of working.
Calculating, measuring and understanding shape
Dealing with measurements in the form of time and introducing the children to calculating time using the 24-hour clock. Using coordinates to draw shapes. There are opportunities for children to use their knowledge of common and regular shapes to reason about positioning and to work out unknown coordinates. Finding areas of squares and rectangles and those of composite shapes.
Handling data and measures
To express probability as a fraction or a decimal fraction.

Science
Relating to the National Curriculum the children will be taught about Changing Materials including:
a) to describe changes that occur when materials are mixed [for example, adding salt to water]
b) to describe changes that occur when materials are heated or cooled
c) about reversible changes, including dissolving, melting, boiling, condensing, freezing and evaporating
d) that non-reversible changes result in the formation of new materials that may be useful
e) that burning materials [for example, wood, wax, natural gas] results in the formation of new materials and that this change is not usually reversible.

Derive and recall multiplication facts up to 10 × 10, the corresponding division facts and multiples of numbers to 10 up to the tenth multiple
Multiply and divide numbers to 1000 by 10 and then 100 (whole-number answers), understanding the effect; relate to scaling up or down
Identify the doubles of two-digit numbers; use these to calculate doubles of multiples of 10 and 100 and derive the corresponding halves

To answer questions by collecting, organising and interpreting data: to use tally charts and frequency tables, pictograms and bar charts to represent results and illustrate observations.
Money, Fractions, Time
To solve one and two step problems involving money, or measures including time, choosing and carrying out appropriate calculation
Recognise unit fractions of numbers and quantities (half, third, quarter etc; litres, grams, kilograms etc.).
To read the time on an analogue clock and on a 12 hour digital clock
Securing Number
Derive and recall all addition and subtraction facts for each number to 20, sums and differences of multiples of 10 and pairs of numbers that total 100
Derive and recall multiplication facts for 2x 3x 4x 5x 6x 10x tables and the corresponding division facts
To order and place numbers to 1000 on an empty number line

Science
Relating to the National Curriculum children will be taught about Grouping and classifying materials
a.to compare everyday materials and objects on the basis of their material properties, including hardness, strength, flexibility and magnetic behaviour, and to relate these properties to everyday uses of the materials
b) that some materials are better thermal insulators than others
c) that some materials are better electrical conductors than others
d) to describe and group rocks and soils on the basis of their characteristics, including appearance, texture and permeability
e) to recognise differences between solids, liquids and gases, in terms of ease of flow and maintenance of shape and volume.

Personal Social and Emotional Development
Getting to know our new classmates through circle time, games and shared activities.

Science
Through this unit children learn about how the skeleton is related to movement and support in humans and what happens to the skeleton and muscles as they move. They also compare human bones and skeletons with those of other animals.
Experimental and investigative work focuses on:
turning questions into a form that can be investigated and collecting sufficient evidence
making observations, measurements and comparisons
interpreting evidence.
Work in this unit also offers opportunities for children to relate understanding of science to personal health.

Fiction - Traditional stories - Begin to understand features of traditional tales. Compare a selection of traditional stories. Describe similarities and differences between the tales. Write dialogue in playscript form. Describe characters feelings through role play writing. Talk about a favourite traditional tale. Compare a traditional story with an alternative version describing similarities and differences. Retell a familiar story and plan a new version of a well-known story. Comment on the story setting, characters and endings.
Non-fiction - Information texts - Explore different types of information books. Begin to notice the difference between fiction and non fiction. Recognise features of a non-fiction text. Use non fiction texts in books and internet form to find answers to questions. Choose a topic to research and find information in a non fiction text. They will plan the layout of an information poster.

This is an overview of the work we will be covering this half term during the topic ‘Traditional Tales’.

Personal Social and Emotional Development
Forming good relationships with peers through a variety of class games.
Taking part and taking turns.
Promoting positive attitudes and self control.

Communication Language and Literacy
Oxford Reading Tree Stories shared reading and listening to story CDs.
Enjoying a range of traditional tales and a selection of fiction and non-fiction texts that interest the children.
Story telling and sequencing stories and activities.
Author Study – Sarah Hayes- This is the Bear
Developing a knowledge of phonemes to spell and read words.
Hear, say and write known phonemes at the beginning, end and middle of simple words.
Learning about simple sentence structure.
Developing handwriting skills: forming letters correctly
Writing about a variety of things – ourselves, traditional tales, things we like to do.

Role Play – Traditional tale settings e.g. a deep dark wood.

Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy
Reciting number rhymes, counting forwards and backwards, reading and writing numbers.
Comparing and ordering numbers.
Simple addition and subtraction.
Measures: Money, days of the week, o’clock times on an analogue clock, comparing lengths.

Knowledge and Understanding of the World
Science:      Name some common materials eg wood, plastic, metal and develop the vocabulary to
                     describe different materials. Identify the materials toys are made from.
                     Waterproofing leading to designing and making a shelter for the Three Little Pigs.
ICT :             Use of a class camera supported and independently.
                     Learning to log on to the school network independently.
                     Use a range of literacy and numeracy software independently.
Geography: Going on ‘welly walks’ around the school environment.
DT:               Design and make a waterproof shelter, using tools and equipment safely.
             Make Muffin Pizzas

Creative Development
Art:         Developing drawing and painting skills through observation and using their imagination.
Music:    Texture: Investigate the sounds a range of percussion instruments make.
                Follow and create musical patterns.
Physical Development
PE:       Games – Ball Skills
             Gym – small apparatus, jumping and landing.

Stories told by Jesus e.g. The Lost Sheep, The Good Samaritan

Other things we would like to let you know about
*Children will soon start coming through the link from 8:35am along with the rest of the school and line up on the big playground ready to be collected when then bell goes. A notice will go up the week before this will begin.
