Curriculum Overview for Summer Term2 : Year 3


Second Half of Summer Term 2011    Year 3

This is an overview of the work we will be covering this half term.

English  -  as well as the Primary Framework
Writing different types of letters both formal and informal writing opportunities
Writing extended adventure stories – The structure of stories and the importance of dialogue.
Story and performance poems
Adventure stories
Author study:  Dick King Smith
Letter writing for a range of purposes.

Mathematics
This half term the whole school maths targets are based on Division. The Year 3 targets are displayed in the classroom.
Securing number facts, relationships and calculating
Partition 3 digit numbers into multiples of 100, 10 and 1 in different ways
Identify patterns and relationships involving numbers or shapes and use these to solve problems
Handling data and measures
To solve a given problem by collecting, organising and interpreting numerical data using tally charts, frequency tables, pictograms and bar charts to represent results and illustrate observations: use ICT to construct a simple bar chart.
Solving Problems
Develop written methods to record, support or explain addition and subtraction of two and three digit numbers
Use practical formal and informal methods to multiply and divide two digit numbers (13 x 3) (50 ÷ 40) round numbers op or down depending on context.
Calculating Measuring and understanding Shape
Identifying right angles and know two right angles make a straight line
Read twelve hour clock to the nearest 5 minute, calculate start and end times for a given interval 
Know the relationship between km, m, m and cm, kg and g, l and ml: choose and use appropriate units to estimate, measure and record 

Science
Habitats of plants and animals
Using simple keys to identify plants and animals
