Curriculum Overview for Summer Term1 : Year 5
First Half of Summer Term 2011 Year 5

This is an overview of the work we will be covering this half term.
English - as well as the Primary Framework
Comparing Radio and TV broadcasts ~ Explore how writers use language for dramatic effects.
Writing & performing playscripts and broadcasts ~ Use and recognise the impact of theatrical effects in drama. Present own views on a text, sequencing points logically and defending views with evidence.
Choral poetry ~ Tell a story using notes designed to cue techniques such as repetition, recap and humour.
Instructional texts ~ Compare different types of information texts and identify how they are structured.
Developing comprehension skills ~ Make notes on and use evidence from across a text to explain events or ideas; compare different types of narrative and information texts and identify how they are structured.
Mathematics
This half term the whole school maths targets are based on Multiplication. The Year 5 targets are displayed in the classroom.
Securing number facts
Understanding percentages; relating them to fractions and decimals
Using a calculator to solve problems, including those involving decimals and fractions.
Counting, partitioning and calculating
Using efficient written methods to multiply and divide.
Using knowledge of rounding place value, number facts and inverse operations to estimate and check calculations.
Science
Micro-organisms.
We will study how and why food decays. The unit will also cover the importance of food hygiene.
