Curriculum Overview for Summer Term1 : Year 4


First Half of Summer Term 2011    Year 4

This is an overview of the work we will be covering this half term.

English  -  as well as the Primary Framework

Information texts: –    
Gathering information from books about animals and developing research skills
Presenting information effectively in a written form using different organisational features such as varying the format of the page
Presenting information in the form of a ‘TV’ broadcast using video cameras and working as a team taking different roles within the group

Mathematics
This half term the whole school maths targets are based on Multiplication. The Year 4 targets are displayed in the classroom.

Counting, partitioning and calculating
Add or subtract mentally pairs of two digit whole numbers (e.g. 47 + 58, 91 – 35)
Derive and recall multiplication facts up to 10 x 10, the corresponding division facts and multiples of numbers to 10 up to the tenth multiple
Develop and use written methods to record, support and explain multiplication and division of two-digit numbers by a one-digit number, including division with remainders 
Securing number facts, understanding shape
Solve one-step and two-step problems involving numbers, money or measures, including time; choose and carry out appropriate calculations, using calculator methods where appropriate
Draw polygons and classify them by identifying their properties, including their line symmetry

Science

Life cycles of plants and animals such as pollination, seed dispersal

Other areas of the Curriculum

Geography:    Investigating a contrasting locality by comparing Old Southampton with
Valley Park (whole term unit). 
Art:        Study of Van Gogh 
RE:        Christian death ceremonies
ICT:        Control technology
PE:         Athletic skills
Country Dancing
Music:        Keyboards Skills – exploring the range of sounds keyboards can produce and pitch
PHSE:        Keeping safe outside school.
