This is an overview of the work we will be covering this half term.
English (as well as the Primary Framework)
Non fiction – Explanations: Reading of non-fiction texts.
Identify features of non-fiction & explanation text. Prepare a presentation about sharks.
Narrative - stories in a familiar setting: Discuss characters, setting and plot.
Write a sequel to the Animated Tale.
Poetry: Read and discuss a wide range of poems. Write descriptive poems on the theme of stars and the moon.
Letters and Sounds
Mathematics
Whole school maths targets for this term are based on ordering numbers.
The Year 2 targets are displayed in the classrooms.
Calculating measure and understanding shape:
Solve problems involving addition, subtraction, multiplication or division in contexts of numbers, measures or pounds and pence.
Add or subtract mentally a one digit number from any 2 digit number.
Estimate, compare and measure lengths, choosing and using standard units (m, cm) and suitable measuring instruments.
Use units of time and know the relationships between them.
Securing number facts, relationships and calculating:
Represent repeated addition and arrays as multiplication, and sharing and repeated subtraction as division.
Use the symbols +, - , x, = and ÷ to record and interpret number sentences involving all four operations.
Calculate the value of an unknown in a number sentence.
Handling data and measures:
Use lists, tables and diagrams to sort objects.
Answer a question by collecting and recording data in a list / table.
Represent the data as a block graph or pictogram to show results.
Science
Relating to the National Curriculum children will learn about the Characteristics of Materials (Sc3) including:
a. use their senses to explore and recognise the similarities and differences between materials
b. recognise and name common types of material
c. find out about the uses of a variety of materials and how these are chosen for specific uses on the basis of their simple properties.
d. find out how the shapes of objects made from some materials can be changed by some processes.
