Curriculum Overview for Autumn Term2 : Year 1


Second Half of Autumn Term 2011 - Year 1

This is an overview of the work we will be covering this half term.
   
English  (as well as the Primary Framework)

Mathematics
Whole school maths targets for this half term are based on Place Value - partitioning into tens and units.  The Year 1 targets are displayed in the classrooms.

 Counting, partitioning and calculating numbers
Relate addition to counting on; recognise that addition can be done in any order; use practical and informal written methods to support the addition of a one-digit number or a multiple of 10 to a one-digit or two-digit number
Understand subtraction as ‘take away’ and find a ‘difference’ by counting up; use practical and informal written methods to support the subtraction of a one-digit number from a one-digit or two-digit number and a multiple of 10 from a two-digit number
 Securing number facts, understanding shape
Visualise and name common 2-D shapes and 3-D solids and describe their features.
Handling data and measures
Estimate, measure, weigh and compare objects, choosing and using suitable uniform non-standard or standard units and measuring instruments
Visualise and use everyday language to describe the position of objects and direction and distance when moving them, for example when placing or moving objects on a game board
Use the vocabulary of halves and quarters in context

Science
Relating to the National Curriculum children will be taught about Forces and Motion including:

a)to find out about, and describe the movement of, familiar things [for example, cars going faster, slowing down, changing direction]
b)that both pushes and pulls are examples of forces
c)to recognise that when things speed up, slow down or change direction, there is a cause [for example, a push or a pull].

History – Guy Fawkes
Art –         Make a clay pot to hold a candle, adding a pattern and decorating it with paint.
PE –         Gymnastics – Balancing on points and patches of the body. 
Outdoor Games – Balancing and skipping
RE –        Candlelight - the Christian Festival of Christmas and Hindu Festival of Divali
ICT –       Word processing
DT –        Making a moving picture based on a nursery rhyme.
PDL –      Going for Goals and Other People Are Special Too.
